Summer 2010
So the goats were a no-go. The neighbors had agreed to let us try them out, so I did have permission to get them in the first place. However, they were probably a little young to be away from a herd (I've since learned that 4+ goats makes a herd in their mind), and I don't think they really got a full chance to get used to my place. They have done well at a friend's house, but that is a temporary solution. So I will need to either give them to this friend (where they would just be a brush-eating goat) or sell them to or share them with a goat-milking partner. I am looking for the latter.
In other news, the garden is doing great so far. My carrots are big and one of the varieties are TOO long! I can dig around it about 5 inches, but it still snaps off. I did manage to get a complete one out of the ground - 14 inches. Since my garden soil is about 8 inches deep, that explains why I'm having a hard time pulling them out of the clay that lies underneath. The mid-length varieties are only 8-10 inches long and 1-2" in diameter. Much easier to work with. Now REALLY I wish I hadn't lost my planting notes from this spring so I could remember which varieties I liked best!
The red potatoes did AWESOME! My husband enjoyed turning over the soil and finding 6-8 potatoes in the shovel-full (I had already pulled all the leafy tops to prepare for harvesting, so each potato was a hidden treasure for him).
Spring lettuce did very well, especially since our season took an extra long time to warm up and get sunny. But it was nice that something in the garden benefited by the extended spring.
I am working on harvesting the garden early, so we can re-stain the deck (just south of the garden). If we covered the garden with plastic to protect the plants, they would likely die from the heat. Perhaps this will mean that I'll actually have space for a fall garden (supposed to be planted July/August).
